2020 A new study found a decrease in heart disease and stroke among diabetics in recent years in Australia.

Diabetes significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including  Heart attacks  and stroke.
According to studies, diabetics over the age of 18 have a 2 to 4 times higher risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases, compared to people without diabetes.

Almost 40% of people who develop heart attacks are diabetic. 

Good news – dangerous but controllable – many professional medical associations, including the American Heart Association ( AHA ), count diabetes as one of the most significant risk factors that can be controlled.

So who was tested in the study? Checked and followed for 5 years  Another 13,995 subjects aged 64.8 years on average, about half of them (50.4%) men. Of the subjects, 2,800 were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

 1,291 diabetics recruited for the study between 1993-1996
  186 subjects who died, of which 105 died of cardiovascular diseases,
  149 subjects who developed heart attacks, 55 who developed strokes
197 who developed heart failure  which required hospitalization.

and followed up and compared to the group

  1,509 diabetics recruited for the study between 2008-2011. 
173 subjects who died, of which 46 died from cardiovascular diseases,
109 subjects who developed heart attacks,
36 subjects who developed a stroke
150 subjects who developed heart failure that led to hospitalization.

Because there is positive news – it is true that it is not yet in Israel, but the study indicates an improvement in the condition of diabetics in Australia

 In Israel, according to the available data, there is still room for improvement in this aspect: the cardiology association data show that based on periodic surveys ( ACSIS surveys), in recent years there has been an increase in the rate of diabetics among Israelis who develop heart attacks. 

So what can we learn from the Australians? 

The results of the study showed two important things. 
1.  Adopting a healthy lifestyle : a healthy diet reduced in saturated fats and industrialized food, regular physical activity and quitting smoking cigarettes. In Australia it is done with government support and it appears to be one of the factors contributing to the decline.  

2. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels and maintaining balance. Medicine is evolving and it is very important to receive appropriate personal medication.  

3. Balance levels  blood lipids  – If necessary, using drugs to lower high values ​​of  bad cholesterol  ( LDL ) and triglycerides.

4. Reducing pressures.
